Older Americans say retirement won’t bring an end to work – Greensboro – The Business Journal

A new survey found that 82 percent of older Americans think they’ll still work in some capacity after retirement

Mike Hammer‘s insight:

FROM MY VIEW:

Since 2008, retirement has taken on a different meaning for most of the Baby Boomers who will continue working past retirement or take on their passion with a new career.

It’s no secret that the American economy isn’t creating more jobs, just more debt. Baby Boomers will need to stay on the job longer or come in as specialists or independents after retirement to cover the skills gap, already big enough for the proverbial Mac truck to drive through.

Boomers took over from their WWII parents and helped build this great nation. They helped to put the Social Security system in place to force saving for retirement. Now as they approach retirement, they are not sure they will be able to collect on their program. Their staying on the job later also holds rising stars to lateral positions. Retiring to take a part-time job also takes away jobs some families have for years depended on to make ends meet. Yet, the government keeps printing money and passing out SNAP food cards like candy. Meanwhile, those who want to work can’t find work.

In this environment government dependency is growing, but the secret of success is still entrepreneurship, innovation and self-reliance. boomers know that only too well.
